Flood gates installed

This is just one of the projects being undertaken to prepare Deniliquin for the rising flood water.

Last week, ERC general manager Phil Stone said the free boards that fill in the gaps in the levee surrounding the main town area would be installed if the river level reached 9m or 92.25AHD (the height above sea level).

“The levee will manage a moderate flood,” Mr Stone said.

“We will need to work with some community members who have built decks and other infrastructure over the levee bank.

“We are making preparations to protect the community.”

Mr Stone said that “at any time over the next few days, we could put those (free boards) in place”.

Edward River Council will also install flood gates at McLean Beach entrance today, where the river has reached it’s highest level in years.
