Mahdi Hosseini, 19, of Kialla, pleaded guilty in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court to driving while suspended and two counts of failing to give way.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Luke Lund told the court police saw Hosseini driving on Maude St in Shepparton on January 28.
He did not stop at a stop sign at the intersection with Hayes St as he turned into the street.
He again failed to stop at a stop sign at Wyndham St before turning into that street.
Hosseini’s probationary driver’s licence had also been suspended for three months a month earlier.
He told police at the time he “made a mistake” and that he had been driving without a licence, Sen Constable Lund said.
Hosseini told police at the time he was driving because he had had a “late night finish” and wanted “to get home a bit earlier”, Sen Constable Lund said.
Magistrate Peter Mithen disagree with him though.
“It wasn’t a mistake. It was a deliberate act,” Mr Mithen said.
Representing himself in court, Hosseini said his family was at a funeral that day and he had to go to work as an apprentice plumber.
Hosseini was fined $500, but no conviction was recorded.
The sentence also came with a warning from the magistrate.
“At stop signs, you’ve got to stop. They are put at dangerous intersections,” Mr Mithen said.
The magistrate did not cancel Hosseini’s licence.
