Councillors, executive team members and members of Edward River Council’s Green Team toured key waste management sites in preparation for the upcoming launch of the new three-bin waste system.
The tour included visits to the Veolia Echuca Materials Recycling Facility, Biomix Composting Facility near Stanhope and The Green Pipe in Moama.
The visit allowed participants to witness first hand the processes involved in recycling at Veolia and composting at Biomix.
JR Richards, who won the contract to deliver a kerbside collection service, accompanied ERC reps on the field trip giving insights into the new service.
Deputy Mayor Councillor Marc Petersen said council remains committed to sustainable waste management.
“The upcoming transition to the three-bin system represents an important, shared commitment to a cleaner, greener future for our region – and this will be beneficial for our community,” he said.
The service is scheduled to commence on July 1 for Deniliquin residents.
Councillor Shannon Sampson expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, and said he learned a lot from the tour.
“Our visit was very interesting,” he said.
“It’s clear that the three-bin system is not just a change required from legislative changes imposed on council — it was also impressive to see where the waste goes and what products are being created instead of the waste heading to landfill.”
Councillor Linda Fawns noted the importance of the facilities toured.
The Veolia Echuca Materials Recycling Facility plays a crucial role in the recycling journey, while the Biomix Composting Facility will be the destination for food and green waste as part of the comprehensive three-bin system.
“Services like these reduce the amount of waste going into landfill – they are integral in assisting our community reduce our environmental impact and to work toward achieving more sustainable waste management practices,” Cr Fawns said.
