The Shelterbag is a portable, sheltered bed that rolls up into a bag. It is waterproof, lightweight, easy to handle and has an extra compartment for some personal items.
It comes with a built-in mattress and a pillow, but also has room for an extra sleeping bag or blanket, making it adaptable for all seasons.
A flexible tent pole is integrated into the hood to keep it upright, providing more space and better shelter from the rain.
Rotary president Angela Frino said the bags were donated to Vinnies Services Deniliquin, to help with its support of the homeless in our community.
“Homelessness is a significant problem which we are aware of, and our club purchased these Shelterbags to help those sleeping rough, or the homeless, to have a little bit of dignity and a warm place to sleep,” Ms Frino said.
“The Shelterbags provides warmth, comfort and protects them from wind and cold - it can protect them from the harsh winter elements.
“The bags also have a pocket for any personal belongings, so that they can rest knowing that they have their items secure with them too.”
Vinnies Deniliquin team leader case worker Meghan Fisher said the Shelterbags donation has come at an opportunity time.
“We too have been preparing some winter essential packs for the homeless, knowing how much it affects people in our town,” she said.
Vinnies Deniliquin is also preparing to hold its annual Deniliquin Vinnies Sleepout, to be held this August.
Community members sleep out in a public space as part of a fundraiser, designed to raise awareness and supporting funds for homelessness support.
The annual St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal has also been launched this week.
