The initiative requires the students to use a range of skills including maths, English, science and persuasion (fundraising) as part of their journey.
By the time the competition in Maryborough rolls around this November, they will have built two pushcarts to withstand a gruelling but fun few days of competition.
Guiding the two teams is teacher Christie Gavel, who said the competition attracts thousands of people.
Mrs Gavel said the children are already well advanced with their plans, and she is excited for them to experience an event of this size.
“I have been blown away by their discovery and decision making,” she said.
“It pleases me to see them so engaged and integrating all facets of their everyday learning through a practical and theory-based approach.”
While the teams’ initial steps and trainings have been impeded by the latest wave of COVID-19 in the community, Mrs Gavel said they are now making fantastic progress.
The children have been working on their fitness, adding more steps to their training circuit, organising what materials are needed to build their carts - which are made mostly from recycled materials - and the best way to construct them.
Each team - known as Northern Stars and Deni Diamonds - are documenting thier progress on a digital platform called SWAY.
They provide details about cart development, team selections, practice sessions and engineering solutions, all complemented by photos.
Because of this facet of the program, Mrs Gavel said cybersecurity is an important part of the learning associated with taking part.
Fundraising for the program is ongoing, and anyone who would like to sponsor the school’s pushcarts teams is asked to contact the school on 5881 1042.
Donations will assist with construction of the carts, and travel expenses for the large team.
The school will accept cash, suitable gift cards, and even recyclable materials for use of the carts.
“The teams are trying to producesustainable carts and are in need of recyclable materials, especially wheels,” Mrs Gavel said.
