PREMIUM News December: By Deniliquin Pastoral Times Jan 17, 2025 Another 30,000 golden perch (yellowbelly) fingerlings were released in the Edward River system thanks to the Edward River Kolety Fishing Challenge. Locals anglers, event sponsors and visitors all responded to a last minute callout for release volunteers, with 50 people helping to introduce bucket and esky loads of the yellowbelly to the river across two release points in Deniliquin. More than 100 gifts were distributed to local children through a combined community Christmas effort. It followed another successful Marc Kingston Memorial Toy Run coordinated by the Ulysses Motorcycle Club, with support from the Deniliquin Antique Vehicle Club and Deniliquin Salvation Army. The Salvos also organised Christmas hampers for 60 families to be delivered at the same time. Pictured at the toy run are David Nolte, Barry Rutledge, Peter Nisbet and Peter Nakivell. The entire region was on high alert with a spate of car thefts, home break-ins and car break -ins being reported regularly throughout December. It followed a series of car thefts and business break-ins from about mid-November onwards. Police were urging community members to take extra care, look out for their neighbours and provide any important information to police. Photo by SCM Jeans Peter Humphries (pictured with former colleague Rhonda Hetherington) announced his retirement as a teacher at Deniliquin High School, after almost 40 years at the school. With a career spanning so long at one school, Mr Humphries said it had been quite special to teach multiple generations of local families. He expressed joy at making genuine connections with some of his students over the years. Sixteen determined students from Deniliquin High School - and their teacher and community teammates - triumphantly completed the gruelling Great Victorian Bike Ride through torrential downpours. In a remarkable feat, the group set a record by conquering the longest single-day ride in the event's 40-year history. Deniliquin High School’s week-long Year 10 Driver Education Program was held, incorporating the traditional mock crash, driving experiences with the Deniliquin Sporting Car Club and a host of other hands on and informative lessons to exposes students to a number of real-world driving tips, scenarios and safe driving practices.
