After hosting the Deni Rovers last weekend in what was a difficult task for the Mathoura senior side, the Cutters will face a strong Saints ensemble.
In their match up with the Rovers, Mathoura struggled to get any sort of momentum going and were ultimately defeated.
Mathoura only had two goal scorers - Corey Wanganeen with his solitary goal, and Wade Austin with another two.
Mathoura only managed Mathoura 3.1 (19) while Deni kicked away to 28.19 (187).
Meanwhile, Berrigan were able to score a convincing win in their round one game against Rennie, 15.15 (105) to 4.7 (31).
Facing two top teams at the start of the season is a tough ask for the Cutters, but senior coach Adam Bourke is adamant his side is staying positive, trying to stay competitive and continuing to grow as a playing group despite the loss.
“We look forward to every game. It was a bit tough against Deni, we were undermanned and outgunned by a pretty slick side.
“I can’t fault our effort at all, it was just some basic skill errors that Deni were able to capitalise on, we need to be accountable going both ways.”
The Cutters and Saints met only once last season, and the Cutters fell agonisingly short of a win.
The scoreline read Berrigan 10.9 (69) to Mathoura 10.8 (68).
“One of our big aims for the weekend is to negate and cut down on our goals from turnovers,” Bourke said.
“We want to go into every week and game with the belief we can win.
“Obviously we are a young side, and we’re looking to keep developing, but that belief is there that if we stay positive and competitive, we can be in the fight to win.”
The senior game between Berrigan and Mathoura will kick off from 2pm at the Berrigan Recreation Reserve.
