They were developed by the Aboriginal Liaison Committee as statements of commitment to the culture of the First Nations People, as a part of the many different cultures in our beautiful community.
The motion was put forward by Cr Linda Fawns, Chair of the Aboriginal Liaison Committee.
Mayor Cr Peta Betts expressed her ongoing commitment to the First Nations people of Edward River Council and the establishment of the Aboriginal Liaison Committee.
“It has been an absolute privilege to participate in this forum,” said Mayor Cr Betts.
“This committee was incredibly positive and collaborative when discussing the working group for the Cultural Festival, and have been instrumental in the development of these important statements to support our positive partnership with traditional owners, so I am thrilled councillors have supported this motion.”
Council has adopted the following wording for future Acknowledgements of Country:
The Edward River Council acknowledges and embraces the First Nations Peoples, the Wamba Wamba/Perrepa Perrepa Peoples, as the Traditional Owners of the Lands within the Edward River Council area.
More broadly, the committee recommended that the Edward River Council also recognises the diversity of different cultures within our community and their contribution.
Ahead of the Cultural Festival scheduled for January 2023, the Aboriginal Liaison committee collaborated on the appropriate wording to invite people to join in the festivities on country.
This festival is being held within the homelands of the Wamba Wamba/Perrepa Perrepa Peoples and recognises the unique and diverse cultures within the Edward River Council community in and around the Kolety (Edward River).
The Wamba Wamba/Perrepa Perrepa people and Edward River Council invite people of all cultures to celebrate with them the diversity of each of our cultures within our community.
Council said planning for the Cultural Festival, which will be funded by a Regional NSW - Regional Growth Fund Community Grant, is well underway.
