That is what NAIDOC 2024 - which began on Sunday - means to Deniliquin Local Aboriginal Land Council CEO Rose Dunn.
A number of activities have been planned to mark the week, including the popular Koori Market in the Deniliquin CBD this Thursday.
To be held from 10.30am to 2.30pm at the Multi Arts Centre, Mrs Dunn said in addition to market stalls there will be 24 different service providers in attendance.
She said it is a great opportunity for everyone to see “what services our people can access”, and to just bring people together.
“Most people don’t usually get together. They have a yarn, have a yap, have lunch and see what’s out there.
“Local people will be selling their arts and crafts, candles, key rings and other crafted wares.
“We’ve got a jumping castle for the kids and there’s also a barbecue lunch.
“There’s a lot on for everyone. It’s not just for Aboriginal people but for the wider community to come along, learn and have a yarn.”
Deniliquin LALC kicked off their NAIDOC Week celebrations with a breakfast and flag raising ceremony at their Wood St offices yesterday.
It continues with an Elders Luncheon from 11.30am at the Coach House Hotel today.
