The 12 year-old swam a scorcher – in keeping with our recent run of warmer weather – at a Wagga Wagga meeting at the weekend.
His 35.46 seconds for the 50m dash set a club record for his age and more than qualified him for the state titles.
The arrival of the warmer weather has also meant the Deniliquin Swim Club is back in action for the 2023-24 season.
Secretary Michelle Carter says it is great to see so many kids involved and she is looking forward to another great year.
“The kids had their first sessions last week and while it is still a bit chilly in the pool, they are certainly enjoying being back,” Michelle says.
For the first time the club this year is offering free membership for a come and try session up until January 13.
Last year around 30 kids were involved in the club and this year is looking even better.
“The new membership structure has been really good and encouraged a few new faces which is great, especially considering swim safety is an integral part of life with so many rivers, creeks and channels around Deniliquin,” she says.
The development squad runs two days a week – plus Tuesday time trials – while the performance squad trains three days a week as well as the Tuesday time trials. Enrolment in the performance squad enables participation in swim meets across the state.
“We have had some pretty strong swimmers competing at state level and school championships over the years,” Michelle says.
Michelle says the club is inclusive and anyone can come along.
“We are working very closely with the pool and the Learn to Swim Program and we are hoping we will get a few more kids feed up into the swim club through there as well.
“It’s a great club to join and the kids have a lot of fun and learn a very important skill along the way.”
