Benalla CFA captain Jamie Beaton said firefighters were called after a tradesman working next door spotted smoke coming from the roof of the Bridge St East building.
The tradesman spotted flames coming from the roof cavity.
Two fire trucks and 10 firefighters attended the fire, pulling sheets of iron off the roof and extinguishing the fire.
Mr Beaton said the fire started from an electrical fault.
He praised firefighters for containing it to the roof cavity.
“They did a great job containing it to a small space,” Mr Beaton said.
Amcal+ Pharmacy landlord Pauline Messenger, who owns the building, was full of praise for all those who helped.
“The man who saw the smoke, if it hadn’t been for him … it could have been a terrible, terrible thing,” Mrs Messenger said.
She also thanked everyone involved in ensuring the fire remained small.
“Thank you to the man who saw the smoke coming out off the roof of the pharmacy … and reported it to the authorities,” she said.
“Thank you to all who answered the calls — police, fire brigade, Ausnet and the electrician.”
