I have nominated for next month’s Edward River Council election because I believe our council needs a fresh start with an experienced voice.
Having served as mayor of the previous Deniliquin Council, as well as administrator during the merger transition, I am fully aware of the challenges faced by local government, especially in our region.
As a local businessman over the past 35 years, I also appreciate the challenges being faced in our business community, including some which directly relate to the way ERC operates within the business environment.
If elected, I want to play a role in building a collaborative and respectful council that always places the benefit of the community and ratepayers at the forefront.
I believe my local government experience will be beneficial to this process.
It is important we build a council that works with the community; we need to listen to the views of all individuals, respect those views which may differ from our own and when a majority decision is made, respect and support that decision.
Our council needs to be transparent. When Robbie Sefton conducted the ‘Our Region, Your Say’ report, it highlighted the community’s desire for effective transparency and communication, and I believe this needs to be a focus.
The increasing rate burden is also an issue of concern for many residents, and while this is a difficult area to address, if I am part of the new council I will be doing everything in my power to ensure the council operates within its financial means, and this will include looking closely at our bureaucracy to see what savings can be made. Sound financial management must be a priority.
I was raised in Deniliquin, educated at our high school and have been fortunate to have a long association in business and sporting circles.
Like many others, I want to help ensure we continue to enjoy a wonderful lifestyle, while building the foundations for future generations.
This can be achieved with a united council that shows mature and respectful leadership to the community.
Whether you live in our main urban centre, one of our villages, or on a farm, Edward River Council needs to be working for you, and with you.
I would welcome your vote, and give a commitment that I will do everything possible to be part of a council that everyone in our community can look on with pride.
Yours etc.
