Without more people signing up in the next couple of months, the unit could be closed in mid-March.
Currently, Murchison only has one operational member, according to Victoria SES community resilience co-ordinator for the Goulburn River catchment Liz Frazer.
“We’re looking for nine more — a total of 10 people — to volunteer.
“Without that, Murchison doesn’t have an emergency response for floods and storms,” Ms Frazer said.
This isn’t the first time the town has faced the need to recruit more volunteers to help with local emergency response, but this is the first time it has faced closure as a result.
Flying like a phoenix
Classy Finley-owned trotter Arcee Phoenix bounced back into the winner’s circle with a stirring win in the $75, 000 Aldebaran Park Maori Mile at last Saturday night’s Bendigo Cup meeting.
The win completed back-to-back wins in the feature, having won it in 2024 when he accounted for Musa Metro and Queen Eldia.
The six-year-old son of Trixton has had a run of near misses which included eight top four finishes - including three in feature races in New Zealand - but hadn’t won in 10 starts.
His last win was recorded at Melton in March last year.
One of his owners is Finley butcher and former long-serving president of the Finley Football Club, Ashley Haynes.
Haynes and former Finley local and fellow butcher Chris Shaw were in the syndicate which bred Arcee Phoenix, who is now giving them a dizzy ride on the racetracks.
Not just at home here
Uniformed officers from Echuca Police Station say various criminal offences occurred over the holiday period.
Campaspe detectives are investigating a fire that occurred at Echuca Harness Racing Club around 4pm on Tuesday, December 31.
An area of grass about 20m by 30m was burnt in the club’s grounds, adjacent to houses on Berryman Close where it is believed to have originated.
The CFA attended the fire, and investigators deemed it was suspicious, believing it to be deliberately lit.
Investigators are appealing for witnesses with information or footage to contact the station.
On the morning of December 31, a 23-year-old woman was arrested by Victoria Police in relation to an alleged burglary at KFC Echuca and an alleged motor vehicle theft on Ogilvie Ave.
Police allege she was found in possession of stolen property and the vehicle, and was charged with both offences.
