Berrigan Show committee member Andrew Horne was presented with his medallion by Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Councillor Sarah Hanlon during the Berrigan Show’s official opening on Sunday.
“The award recognises those who have made a significant contribution in line with the vision to educate our community on the value of sustainable agriculture” Ms Hanlon said.
Mr Horne was recognised for his long-standing commitment to not only the Berrigan Show Society but to agricultural shows across NSW.
Vision-impaired tennis hits Shepparton
Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria is busting out the racquets and balls for a come-and-try tennis day for blind and low-vision players in Shepparton next week.
The equipment and rules are slightly different; foam balls with rattles, more bounces and tactile line markings for sensory spatial judgement.
But the end game is the same — to have fun, and bundles of it.
Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria assistant program co-ordinator Tegan Allen explained what will happen on October 17 at McEwen Reserve Tennis Club between 10.30am-1pm.
“We’re going to be having a come-and-try event for people with vision loss, but we’re also inviting their friends and family,” she said.
“We’re going to have two players that play blind tennis professionally come along, and they’ll be just back from playing in France.
“They’ll be talking about their experience of playing professionally, and they’re also coaches, so they’ll give a bit of a talk and helping introduce the game to people that come along.”
Runner aims for glory in Chicago
Echuca’s Brady Threlfall is heading to the US to run in the world-renowned Chicago Marathon this October.
The Chicago course is one of six world marathon majors and is among the three most coveted in the US, alongside Boston and New York City.
Threlfall, having competed internationally numerous times, has never raced in the US before and was excited to see what all the hype was about.
“It’s one of the pinnacle marathons in the world to go to,’’ he said.
“Both the men’s and women’s world records are set there, so it’s a bit of a bucket list race that I’ve always wanted to do.”
The Chicago Marathon sees more than 50,000 runners annually, with most applicants needing to hit time qualifiers for selection based on their age range.
