Police said it was understood a male brandishing a knife entered a petrol station on Ogilvie Ave, Echuca, about 5.45am on May 23.
Investigators have been told the male threatened a shop attendant and demanded money, before fleeing the scene empty-handed, police said.
No-one was physically injured.
Police last week revealed details of a man they believe may be able to assist with their investigation.
He is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, aged in his mid to late teens, of medium build and approximately 160cm tall.
The male was seen wearing a grey and black speckled hooded jumper, black tracksuit pants and black shoes.

Digging up a massive surprise
Raymond Bauer was digging up his veggie patch and struck gold.
Tiptoeing around the jungle-like weeds and glaze-covered soil, his only intent was to save the vegetables that lay beneath from frost getting to the vines.
What he discovered, instead, was a colossal sweet potato.
As he trekked back to his house, his wife peered out the window, eyes popping at the sight of her 72 year-old husband lugging a 17kg vegetable to the back door.
“They’d make a big chip, wouldn’t they?” he said with a grin.
Learning setback
Hands on Learning students across Echuca-Moama have been disappointed following the theft of essential tools from a shared equipment trailer vital to the programs.
Eight schools in Campaspe Shire share the Hands on Learning trailer, with three utilising it in the Echuca-Moama area: Echuca Twin Rivers Specialist School, St Joseph’s College Echuca and 208 Echuca Primary School.
$10,000 worth of tools were stolen from the trailer earlier this month.
This sets back all the Hands on Learning construction programs significantly until either the tools are returned or more can be supplied, which could take weeks or months.
