In beautiful bushlands surrounding the Gulpa Creek Walking trail at Mathoura, Mathoura Public School stduents were last week immersed in “authentic learning experiences” with a cultural element.

Celebrating NAIDOC Week early due to the school holidays, the students met local Aboriginal elder Rick Ronnan in the forest.

He opened the celebrations with a 'Welcome to Country' before holding a traditional smoking ceremony for the students and staff.

Students then took part in a variety of activities including an artefact presentation, playing the didgeridoo and tapping clap sticks, Aboriginal dancing, creating artworks using charcoal, cooking damper over the campfire and observing local wildlife.

Students also explored a canoe tree located on the banks of the Gulpa Creek, where they learnt about bark canoes.

“Mathoura Public School is extremely grateful for the ongoing support that Rick Ronnan continues to provide to the school, educating their students about local Aboriginal history and culture,” principal Janice Eddy said.
